In the UW-Milwaukee Body Weight & Shape Research Laboratory, we implement a primarily psychosocial perspective to explore questions about the interpretation and management of body weight and shape within various sociocultural contexts (e.g., social relationships, college environment) and populations (e.g., young adults, adults transitioning into marriage). We also analyze how feedback about body weight and shape influences body image and health behavior. We use quantitative and qualitative methodologies using surveys, experiments, and interviews (e.g., one-on-one, small focus groups). A better understanding of how members within a society define and negotiate body weight and shape can inform the development of health promotion and disease prevention efforts.
